shopping guide, nyc - boys only

Bergdorf Goodman´s Men
745 Fifth Ave., New York, NY 10019 40.763208 -73.97373
at 58th St.
Review:
Located directly across Fifth Avenue from the main Bergdorf Goodman department store, the men's offshoot—open since 1990—is no less graceful or sophisticated than its distaff counterpart. Fashion-conscious wives send their husbands here for the city's largest selection of elegant formalwear, as well as upper-crust accessories and designer sportswear. Decorated to feel like a clubby men's lounge with plenty of mid-century modern furniture, the three-floor department store is a calm, quiet preserve of designer fashion—in welcome contrast to the sometimes frenetic energy of the women's store. Impeccably suited salesmen beckon in each department on the store's colorful main floor, navigating shoppers through the bountiful tie and shirt selections from labels like Charvet and Etro. On the cavernous second floor, formalwear from houses like Brioni, Bamford & Sons and Spencer Hart hang casually in individual areas, each with its own sitting room and decorated to resemble a Tribeca loft. Downtown guys (or midtowners with sub-14th St. leanings) have their pick of avant-garde sportswear upstairs on three, with styles from Dsquared to Thom Browne; unrepentant purists can stick to Ralph Lauren and Gucci.
